TYPES OF FIRE EXTINGUISHER

A water fire extinguisher is designed for use on Class A fires, which involve solid combustible materials like wood, paper, textiles, and cardboard. It works by cooling the fire and removing heat, effectively stopping the burning process. Water extinguishers are ideal for environments with minimal electrical risks and are commonly found in offices, schools, and warehouses. However, they should not be used on fires involving flammable liquids, electrical equipment, or cooking oils, as this can lead to dangerous outcomes.

A foam fire extinguisher is suitable for both Class A and B fires, meaning it can be used on solid combustibles like wood, paper, and textiles, as well as flammable liquids such as petrol or paint. The foam forms a blanket over the fire, cutting off the oxygen supply and cooling the burning material to prevent re-ignition. Foam extinguishers are versatile, commonly used in environments like offices, warehouses, and garages, but they should not be used on electrical fires or cooking oil fires.

A CO2 fire extinguisher is primarily used for electrical fires (Class E) and flammable liquids (Class B). It works by displacing oxygen, effectively suffocating the fire and stopping it from spreading. Since CO2 is a non-conductive and non-corrosive gas, it’s safe to use on sensitive electrical equipment such as computers, servers, and machinery. CO2 extinguishers do not leave any residue, making them ideal for offices and data centers. However, they are not suitable for Class A (solids) or Class F (cooking oils) fires.

A dry powder fire extinguisher is a multi-purpose extinguisher used on Class A, B, and C fires, making it suitable for solid combustibles, flammable liquids, and gas fires. The powder forms a barrier, cutting off the fire's oxygen supply, and preventing re-ignition. It is effective on electrical fires but leaves a residue that can damage sensitive equipment. Powder extinguishers are commonly used in workshops, garages, and industrial settings. They are not recommended for indoor areas due to the mess and respiratory risks.

A wet chemical fire extinguisher is specifically designed for Class F fires, which involve cooking oils and fats. It works by spraying a fine mist that cools the fire and forms a soapy layer, sealing the surface of the oil to prevent re-ignition. Wet chemical extinguishers are ideal for commercial kitchens, restaurants, and food preparation areas. They can also be used on Class A fires (solid combustibles), but are not suitable for electrical fires or flammable liquids. Proper training is recommended for safe use.
